When you’re a college student trying to decide on your future career path, internships can be valuable as a way to get hands-on experience in real-world work environments. Plus, their frequently unpaid work can greatly impact the bottom line for nonprofits like Jamboree.
Thanks to our partnership with Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), two part-time AmeriCorps members have served with Jamboree over the last 10 months. AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that foster civic engagement. Cory and Rodrigo each committed to invest 900 hours to make a difference in their community, and their work was underwritten by donations from the federal government, foundations, and corporations.
“I gained significant, real-world knowledge”
A student at Chapman University in Southern California, Cory Butcher studied business, political economics and finance, with an eye towards pursuing a master’s in Global Affairs or Public Administration. As an Assistant Project Manager with Jamboree’s housing development team, Cory has been part of regular construction and project management meetings, and assisted the Project Managers with acquisition, financing, construction, and marketing of affordable housing projects.
Senior Director of Development Tung Tran said, “Cory has been working hard to assist with Tax Credit Allocation Committee (TCAC) applications, gathering data on properties and construction costs, and performing due diligence for projects.” TCAC administers the federal and state Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) programs that promote private investment in affordable rental housing for low-income Californians.
“I used my skills to benefit mutual growth”
Pursuing a degree in public administration at California State University Dominguez Hills, Rodrigo Ramos has been working as an Assistant Project Manager with our asset management team. In this role, he’s provided support for property compliance monitoring, physical inspections, risk management and financial oversight of affordable housing communities in Jamboree’s portfolio. He was part of database development efforts, and execution of sustainable and green initiatives, regularly attending weekly housing development and asset management meetings, and gained a valuable overview of affordable housing development.
Senior Asset Manager Paola Flores said, “Rodrigo demonstrates a love and passion for the work we do. He shows up ready to work and eager to learn about asset management essentials and key components that revolve around project operations and lifecycles. We’re excited to have been part of his growth and to help lay the groundwork of his future success.“
